Brown Berets Commemorate Centro Boycott Anniversary

Tuesday, May 17, 2005

The Brown Berets de Azltan called a demonstration at the Centro Cultural de la Raza to commemorate the anniversary of the current Centro administration's use of the police against the community. The administration used negative Latino stereotypes to gain sympathy from the City and bring a large contingent of police officers to keep artists, activists, educators and families out of the Centro following a peacefulmeeting denouncing the administration's censorship, harrassment and destruction of art. The unconscionable action on May 4, 2000, combined with the administration's hostility and refusal to address the concerns of the community, resulted in the boycott.

SOCC artists work with homeless youth to create digital mural for MCASD

April 7, 2005

SOCC artists Perry Vasquez and Mario Torero worked with homeless and at-risk youth from the Monarch and Harborside Schools to create a digital mural for the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego. As part of the program, students were given a tour of Chicano Park by Torero and a tour of Petco Park by San Diego Union Tribune sports writer Nick Canepa. Combining painting, fotoaktion and the theme of "Art Saves Lives," lead artist Vasquez helped the students create artwork for a digital mural on the construction fence that fronts the Museum's expansion project on Kettner next to the Santa Fe Depot. Vasquez worked with the museum's education curator, Monica Garza, to develop workshops to help the students incorporate their painted and photographic imagery into the banners. An ice cream social was held for the students on Thursday, April 7. Click here for more photos.
