"Perhaps we can bring the day when children will learn from their earliest days that being fully man and fully woman means to give one's life to the liberation of the brother who suffers.  It is up to each one of us.  It won't happen unless we decide to use our lives to show the way."

Mark Lakeman & Lydia Doleman From Oregon's City Repair Project

Don't miss this rare opportunity to meet Mark Lakeman and Lydia Doleman from Portland's grassroots urban planning collective, the CIty Repair Project (http://www.cityrepair.org). The City Repair Project is an all-volunteer grassroots organization helping people reclaim their urban spaces to create community-oriented places. Born in 1996 out of a successful grassroots neighborhood initiative that converted a residential street intersection into a neighborhood public square, City Repair began its work with the idea that localization (of culture, of economy, of decision-making) is a necessary foundation of sustainability. Our projects are all aimed at building a more community-oriented and ecologically sustainable society. By reclaiming urban spaces to create community-oriented places, we plant the seeds for greater neighborhood communication, empower our communities, nurture our local culture and honor the interconnectedness of communities and the natural environment.

Artist's Statement: "In my work you see colorful interpretation of situations, both humorous and poignant. Growing up between San Diego and Tijuana has given me richness, balance and understanding of who I am and how I see life. My Mexican culture and traditions were thought by my family. Living away from my country made me be more connected and passionate about my Latin traditions. One of my favorite is to celebrate 'The Day of The Dead' A celebration of how we see life after death. This show 'No es serio este cementerio' is a title of a song sang by the Spaniard group Mecano. Listening to the lyrics gave me the idea of projecting images to my paintings which I found very humorous. Here is a little phrase of the song is in Spanish so you will have an Idea of my presentation for this exhibit. “Y los muertos aqui la pasamos muy bien entre flores de colores y el cielo por mi se puede esperar'. I hope you will enjoy this show as I did painting. Bienvenidos." - Lupita Shahbazi.

We live along a border built by politicians to separate people who would otherwise be united.  We see people denied their basic human rights by those who wish to forge some ideal of an America that never has or ever will truly exist.
